Thread safety. I think that is the killer feature at the moment, but SURELY someone will get round to refactoring actionview and routes in rails and fix that soon? Merb is not a Rails replacement, but more like another string to your bow, something to use when you don't need all of Rails' magic helpers, prefer to roll your own.
For me the best thing abot Rails isn't ActiveResource or ActionView; its ActiveRecord that makes Rails so damn easy to work with, and Merb has that along with other ORM adaptors. As for template agnostic, well you can get plenty of plugins for Rails (HAML being my current favourite - SASS rocks!) to remove the rather verbose, non-DRY ERB templates. Merb is definitely cool. For now both have a place. Merb's place is achieved by offering LESS than Rails
